lay down a marker

体操男子が37年ぶりに団体で金メダルを獲得したニュースで、

銀メダルを獲った英国選手のコメントが紹介されていました。

"China and Japan have dominated for so many years.  You expect them to be first and second.  We have laid down a marker that they are definitely beatable and that the other country as well can push for the top places." 

ここでlay down a marker という表現に注目したいと思います。

British English to say or do something that clearly shows what you will do in the future.

"中国や日本を倒すことができる、そして他の国もトップを狙うことが出来るということを示して見せた。"

時制（現在完了）を使うことで、今も自分達の今回の結果が現在にも大きな影響を与えているという思いを感じることができると思います。
